Anancy (Ananzi, Ananci, or Anansi) gave the early Africanstheirstories and music – the first folklores and mythologies. These grew into great works of literature and art first in Africa and subsequently in the Spanish, English, French, and Portuguese cultures – in fact, in all Euro-Caribbean and American literary forms.

Through his plantation sojourn,Anancy Spider also preserved and guided the ancient African traditions of folklore and mythology – in the forms of oral storytelling and music – in North America, Latin America as well as the Caribbean.

Throughout the Americas, Anansi Spider directed the writer, artist, song-writer and musician from the traditional, spoken forms to the modern expressions of literature, storytelling and music. He fashioned the modern artist in his new American homes, such as in Jamaica, Cuba, Trinidad, the rest of Caribbean, Latin America, as well as in Taino and Spanish cultures. Anancy Spider produced the great authors, musicians, and writers of the African Diaspora with literary expression of stories, inspirational folklore, and other genres. World music and literature have their early beginnings in the legends and mythologies handed down from Anancy.

The first Africans were not literary scholars not folklorists, authors, and musicians as we have today. They came to the new world, bringing with them their cultures, stories, “histories”, mythology, and music. In Jamaica, Barbados – all of the Caribbean – plus in Latin American, Taino, and European cultures, the oral tradition became engrafted into or borrowed by other cultures. The power, beauty, and majesty of the African art forms, added to their diverse and overwhelming presence, gave them great promotion and acceptance.

In African villages, societies, and kingdoms which had existed for thousands of years, the ancient artistic expressions matured into stable, well-developed expressions – entertaining as well as passing on cherished cultural knowledge and ideals. Slavery in the Caribbean and the Americas changed this.

Although we may not regard the early Africans in the Caribbean and the Americas as writers, musicians, and, makers of mythology in a modern sense, their contributions, however, must be regarded as the foundation of our folklore and mythology – in fact, of all American and Caribbean artistic expressions.

There were no formal schools, teachers, authors, or trained musicians – no academic institutions for writing of story orsong. Music – in words and drums primarily – told the stories, fables, and “histories” that future writers, authors, and musicians later coded into what became Jamaican, other Caribbean, Latin American, and Spanish literature – including poetry, stories, and music of all genres such as inspirational folklore and magical realism. Anancy Spider kept it all alive throughout its plantation sojourn!

To the ancient African writer then, the modern author, folklorist, and musician owe what has developed into our written art: literature, music, poetry, folklore – including inspirational folklore – and our modern mythologies which have spread throughout the African Diaspora and the world.

The main purpose of the early African Diaspora writer – the author or composer of Latin, African, Spanish or Caribbean literature – was perhaps not to compose what is now called literature or art. Daily survival – both in the physical and spiritual sense – was perhaps the main motive of their storytelling, music, and dance.

The transition from the oral traditions of music and folklore to written form – the first attempts of writers and composers to transform the richness of daily life into the new visual form of cultural expression – must have been at once startling and magical!

Survival and the transmission of culture, both vertically and horizontally, in the form of stories, music, poetry, folklore, mythology and music – what we today recognize as high art – was what inadvertently developed from our proto writers, authors, and musicians. Theirs – the African American, African Caribbean, or Afro Spanish artistic expressions – were mixtures of written and oral traditions. They were the second level of African artists, folklorists, musicians and storytellers reshaping the American, Taino, Caribbean, and Spanish cultures.

Today, Latin American, Taino, Spanish, and Caribbean, cultures own their artistic traditions, their mythology and literary expression to the advent of writers, storytellers, musicians, folklorists, and authors – whatever the nature of their art – first to the African and secondly to the true transitional protoAfrican artists.
